The Next Level May Not Be Another Sales Technique

Let’s face it.

You probably already know a lot about how to do what you do well.

You know how important it is to listen.

Ask good questions.

Build trust.

Follow up.

Communicate clearly.

Stay present.

Respond thoughtfully.

And help people make decisions that are right for them.

Those skills matter.

And continuing to develop them matters.

But perhaps the next question isn’t:

What else do I need to learn?

Perhaps it’s:

How consistently can I access the capabilities that allow me to use what I already know at my best?

You’ve Probably Experienced Both Versions of Yourself

There are days when conversations just seem to flow.

You’re confident.

Present.

Curious.

You listen more closely.

You ask better questions.

You notice things you might otherwise miss.

You respond naturally instead of searching for the right thing to say.

Connection feels easier.

And the conversation seems to go where it needs to go.

Then there are other days.

Same knowledge.

Same skills.

Same experience.

But somehow, you’re not bringing quite the same version of yourself to the conversation.

Maybe something frustrated you earlier.

Maybe the last conversation didn’t go particularly well.

Maybe you’re distracted.

Maybe you’re simply feeling off.

Whatever the reason, something changed.

Your knowledge didn’t disappear.

Your skills didn’t disappear.

Your access changed.

Your Emotional State Comes Into Every Conversation With You

Every conversation involves more than the words you say.

Your emotional state can influence how well you listen.

What you notice.

The questions you ask.

Your confidence.

Your patience.

Your creativity.

Your ability to connect.

And something even more subtle:

Your emotional state can influence how you interpret what someone else is saying.

When you’re calm, confident, and present, hesitation may sound like curiosity.

When you’re pressured, frustrated, or attached to the outcome, that same hesitation may sound like rejection.

Same words.

Different interpretation.

And that interpretation can influence what you say next, how you respond, and where the conversation goes.

Your emotional state doesn’t just influence what you say.

It can influence what you hear.

Same knowledge.

Same skills.

Different access.

That’s why your emotional state matters.

Because knowing what to do is one thing.

Having consistent access to the capabilities that allow you to do it well is something else entirely.

What If You Worked One Layer Earlier?

A lot of sales and performance training begins with thought.

Become more aware of what you’re thinking.

Redirect unproductive thoughts.

Change the story.

Focus on the outcome you want.

All of that can be valuable.

But there’s another question worth considering:

What emotional state are those thoughts coming from?

Think about how different your thoughts can be when you feel confident, calm, and connected…

Compared with when you feel frustrated, pressured, or uncertain.

So instead of waiting for an unwanted thought to appear and then trying to redirect it…

What if you worked one layer earlier?

What if you intentionally cultivated the emotional states you want to bring into your conversations before those conversations ever begin?

Get Out in Front of Your Day

Most of us begin the day and allow whatever happens next to start establishing our emotional momentum.

An unexpected problem.

A frustrating email.

Someone who doesn’t respond.

A difficult conversation.

A rejection.

Something happening at home.

And before long, we may be carrying the emotional residue of one experience into the next.

But emotional momentum doesn’t only work in one direction.

What if you intentionally established momentum in the direction you wanted to go before the demands of the day had the opportunity to establish it for you?

What if you began your day deliberately cultivating emotional states like:

Love.

Appreciation.

Abundance.

Joy.

Clarity.

Not because you expect everything to go your way.

And not because you’re trying to avoid difficult emotions or pretend challenges won’t happen.

But because those are valuable internal resources to have greater access to when they do.

That’s what getting out in front of your day means.

Instead of waiting to see how the day makes you feel, you begin by intentionally establishing how you want to meet the day.

What If This Became Part of How You Prepare?

You prepare for important conversations.

You learn your business.

You develop your skills.

You understand your customers.

You practice what you’re going to say.

But what about preparing the state you bring into the conversation?

What if becoming better at sales didn’t always require learning another technique…

But developing more consistent access to the capabilities you already possess?

Imagine bringing more confidence, presence, curiosity, creativity, emotional stability, and genuine connection into more of your conversations.

Listening more closely.

Interpreting what people are saying more clearly.

Responding more naturally.

And allowing the conversation to unfold without becoming overly attached to the outcome.

How much better could you become at what you already do?

That question is at the heart of the Human Capability Project.

If what you’ve just read has you thinking differently about your own experiences, the Human Capability Project Summary explores the larger framework behind these ideas—and how we might cultivate more consistent access to the capabilities already within us.
